The Full Mentor

The Full Mentor combines mentoring and feedback on your manuscript-in-progress and is suitable for writers in all genres including fiction, memoir, non-fiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, and journalism. It is aimed at those who are excited about their writing projects and ready to take their work to the next level.

You might recognise yourself here:

  • You have been thinking about a book for a long time, have made some notes and have a few fragments. But you don’t know how to bring them together and you need some support to get this process underway.
  • You are a writer who is mid-way through a book but now feels a little ‘stuck’ – uncertain how to navigate such a big project. You need feedback to know you are on the right track and to help you with next steps.
  • You are an established author who longs for another experienced eye on the text on a regular basis – as well as a mentor who you can talk to in confidence about the challenges of your professional writing life.

If you’d like a combination of ongoing manuscript appraisal and monthly conversations with your coach, The Full Mentor Programme is perfect for you.

Jacqui says:

“Our aim is always to nurture individual writers. As a Full Mentor Client, we keep you accountable and offer honest and constructive criticism about your work in progress, to ensure that you deepen your craft and develop as a creative practitioner during your time with us.

“We match you with a mentor who is perfect for your genre and stage of writing. Your coaching calls are an opportunity to have the vital conversations you need on your writing journey. Whether you wish to discuss voice or structure, dive into the subject of confidence as a writer, find the right writerly routine or ask about connections with the industry – this is your space, and we take you seriously as a writer.”

I still remember the day I signed up with Jacqui at the Writing Coach. We had a brief chat on the phone and I chose the year long mentorship package. In many ways it was a life-changing decision, I hadn’t written a story before. I completed my memoir under Jacqui’s supervision and now have a publisher for that book. The whole process gave me the validation that I am a writer and now have the confidence to take on new challenges like writing articles for my local paper and looking to complete my next book.

A typical programme will include your mentor reading up to 20,000 words in a three-month period. However, when you are not writing this volume of work ( e.g. you are working on journalism or you’d rather concentrate on shorter excerpts), we will define an alternative equivalent programme. For example, your mentor may make tailored lessons for your needs or offer you additional editing of your re-writes.

In all cases, your mentor will make notes on your writing work and give you in-depth feedback during your calls/meetings. Ours is a strengths-based approach which means that we offer honest, constructive criticism – helping you to be aware of what you are already good at, whilst also noting the more challenging areas that need further work, with suggestions of how to improve in those areas.

The annotations are a ‘developmental edit’ – looking at the broad questions that arise from the reading, not a copy-edit.
