The Writing Life

The Writing Life is a coaching-only programme. It is suitable for those seeking clarity, focus and confidence in their creative work. You would love to finish a writing project in the year ahead, but you’d like to do it with a sense of lightness and ease.

You might recognise yourself here:

  • You’re a writer with a desire to make an impact in the world
  • You have too many projects and you struggle to prioritise – you want to get focused and make it happen
  • Your writing life is successful, but it still feels like a struggle sometimes – you’d love to find a coach who understands the challenges and can help you navigate them
  • It’s time to take yourself and your artistic work more seriously – but you need someone to believe in you…

If you are looking for feedback on your work as well as coaching, please choose ‘The Full Mentor’ programme.

The Full Mentor Programme

We love to work with writers seeking devotion to their craft and confidence in their work. If the idea of a balanced creative life feels elusive – we can help.

It’s our intention to support you to create a fulfilling and intentional writer’s life.

Jacqui says:

“As a writer, an entrepreneur, an actor, a coach – I’ve been there. Like you, I’ve experienced the heady excitement of pursuing a passion – and the frustrations of trying to make it all happen at once.

We are so in love with our projects. Our writing or our art is a part of us. We can see ourselves with the finished book in hand, chairing a literary event or writing for the broadsheets. But how to get there when the path is still so unclear…

Some of my clients are already extremely successful – yet they don’t feel it. Together we create the time and the space to go deeper, to experiment with a different approach to our creative life.

In a lifetime devoted to writing and writers, it’s been my privilege to coach hundreds of people to achieve their artistic goals. I’m here to support you, as you choose what is essential in your life and focus on developing the literary or artistic career that you have imagined.”

Personal Coaching with Jacqui and her Team

Personal Coaching with Jacqui and her Team
When you work with Jacqui or her coaching team on the Writing Life programme, we focus on who you are as a writer. There is no feedback on writing work. Instead, we work on the broader aspects of your creative life, which may include:

  • Sources of inspiration
  • Prioritisation of projects and time management
  • Creative blocks
  • Personal boundaries
  • Confidence and self-definition as a writer
  • Your writing routines and how to get to the page
  • Productivity

When taken with Jacqui Lofthouse, The Writing Life can also include:

  • Career guidance
  • The business of writing
  • Making money as a writer
  • Marketing your work
  • Advice on submission and publishing
Victoria Best

Finding Jacqui has been the best thing I’ve done in furthering my writing career – better by far than any course I’ve undertaken or any help I’ve received from agents and editors. Trying to make the transition from academic writing to commercial non-fiction is not easy, but thanks to Jacqui’s insight and support, I finally feel like I might be ready to make it happen. For the first time, I know what I want to do and how I’m going to do it! What I’ve appreciated most of all has been her uncommon ability to put her finger on what needs to change, and to express it in a way that actually motivates me to rewrite. I’ve learned so much, and thoroughly enjoyed it, too. I’d recommend her to all the struggling, baffled and overwhelmed writers I know, if I didn’t want to keep her all to myself…

How we work in the Writing Life programme:

When you begin work with us, we will have a conversation and you will fill in a form to help you get entirely clear on what you need from this process. Many people say that this form alone helps them to begin to unravel their creative blocks and make real strides.

Coaching is entirely tailored to the individual. We speak once a fortnight and each call is likely to have a different focus, though always building on your previous actions. We celebrate your recent achievements and consider how your writing and creative life has developed in recent weeks.

This is the place to discuss your creative dreams and aspirations in an entirely safe space – and to make the commitment to doing the deep work that will lead to real results for you.

Together we will get clear on your vision and start to map it out. Sometimes this means tough choices – in order to make real artistic strides. But it is absolutely worth it. What you focus on grows.

In the course of our work together, we share the tools that you need to create the outcome you desire – whether that’s a published book, a magazine column or a solo exhibition as an artist. We know that writers often have other creative talents and this informs our conversation too.

In essence – our aim at The Writing Coach is to support you at every stage of your writing life, whether you are a beginner or an experienced author. Our mutual aim is to help you have a writing life that you love; for writing to be an integrated part of your life; for you to achieve your writing and creative goals regularly and feel like the writer you have always longed to be.

We offer advice on the creative life and on creative business and help you focus on taking the right action that will lead to real results. Jacqui can also help you with project management and offer resources that will speed your processes.
