Sarah Hewitt is an award-winning author illustrator and has created six picture books. Her work spans different illustration genres, including the intricate realism of ‘The Sleeping Garden’, fun character depiction in ‘The Cornish Pasty Pirates’ and gentle rendering of a baby rhino in ‘Clara’, derived from observational drawing. Her latest picture book ‘Anna’s Garden’ published by Tiny Tree, is a simple story of kindness, sensitively illustrated.
From the first nugget of a story, words and pictures evolve together. Sarah begins her work in traditional media, then completes her work digitally. Her craft is underpinned by a master’s degree in children’s book illustration from Cambridge School of Art and a qualification in visual communication. As well as writing and illustrating for children, Sarah has worked in publishing for 25 years, including running her own publishing services company and specialising in copyright permissions and picture research. This extensive experience has imparted a thorough understanding of the publishing process from manuscript to print – invaluable for those planning to self-publish. Planning, layout, pace, colour palette, character development, typography – just some of the many exciting things to consider and explore when making books with pictures!
Sarah is an empathetic mentor who seeks to guide author illustrators to their full creative potential with outcomes that match the vision they have conjured in their imagination.
