Emma Coxon, writer and Jacqui’s PA at The Writing Coach writes about her own visit to Elmley Nature Reserve.
We are delighted to publish Emma’s article to celebrate our own forthcoming Sisterhood Retreat at Elmley from 8th-11th March 2024. We are very happy to announce that we have one single room remaining for the Retreat. Do book that last place soon…
Nestled amidst the idyllic landscapes of Kent, Elmley Nature Reserve stands as a testament to the serene beauty of the British countryside. It’s not just a getaway; it’s an immersion into the heart of nature itself. A few years ago, my husband and I had the pleasure of spending time at Elmley, and the experience left an indelible mark on my soul.
Elmley Nature Reserve isn’t just another retreat; it’s a sanctuary for both wildlife and weary souls seeking solace in nature’s embrace. Situated on the Isle of Sheppey, Elmley boasts a rich tapestry of habitats, including marshland, grasslands, and reed beds, each teeming with life. As you arrive, you’re greeted by vast expanses of open space, where the only sounds are those of chirping birds and rustling leaves.
One of the most charming aspects of Elmley is its range of accommodations, each offering a unique perspective on the reserve’s natural splendour. From custom-made shepherd’s huts and cosy cabins to the elegant 18th century farmhouse, there’s something to suit every taste and preference. We opted to stay in the Salt Box, a quaint yet elegant abode overlooking the tranquil Swale Estuary. The hut was beautifully appointed, with rustic wooden furnishings, a plush bed adorned with soft linens, and large windows that framed sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. It was the perfect blend of comfort and immersion in nature, allowing us to unwind in style while still feeling connected to the wilderness outside.
One of the highlights of staying at Elmley is the opportunity to explore the astonishing natural beauty of the landscape. Whether you’re an avid birder, a keen photographer, or simply someone who enjoys long walks in the countryside, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
We spent our days wandering along the reserve’s network of trails, each leading us deeper into the heart of this wild and untamed place. From the mesmerising sight of flocks of birds taking flight over the marshes to the delicate beauty of wildflowers blooming in the meadows, every moment felt like a precious gift from nature.
One of the most magical aspects of Elmley is its abundance of wildlife, which thrives in this pristine habitat. From rare bird species to elusive mammals, there’s always something new and exciting to discover around every corner.
During our stay, we were fortunate enough to witness a myriad of fascinating creatures going about their daily lives. From the majestic sight of a marsh harrier hunting over the reed beds to the playful antics of a family of otters frolicking in the water, each encounter left me in awe of the natural world and its infinite wonders.
At Elmley, conservation is a way of life. The reserve is dedicated to preserving and protecting its fragile ecosystems for future generations to enjoy, and this commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of its operations.
From the eco-friendly design of its accommodations to its responsible land management practices, Elmley is leading the way in sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship. By staying at the reserve, not only are you immersing yourself in nature’s beauty, but you’re also supporting its ongoing conservation efforts—a win-win for both visitors and the planet.
As we reluctantly bid farewell to Elmley and began our journey back home to Wiltshire, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the time we’d spent in this magical place. In just a few short days, Elmley had worked its magic on me, restoring my soul and reminding me of the simple joys that can be found in the natural world.
Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat from the stresses of everyday life, giving yourself the time and space to reignite your creativity, or simply hoping to reconnect with nature in all its glory, Elmley Nature Reserve offers an experience like no other.
