We’re delighted to share some wonderful news from our client Larry Culliford, whose non-fiction book Happy as Larry: A Psychiatrist’s Quest for Mental Health and Wellbeing has recently been published by New Generation Publishing.
Larry worked on the development of his manuscript with Susan Watt, consultant at The Writing Coach, shaping a deeply personal and wide-ranging memoir into a finished, publishable book. Larry says of his experience working with Susan:
Susan Watt is delightful, intelligent, well educated, supportive, sensible and sensitive. She knows her job and does it brilliantly.
A thoughtful and far-reaching memoir
Filled with engaging tales of a troubled childhood, a challenging career, adult love and heartbreak, global adventures, cosmic coincidences and many other extraordinary events, Happy as Larry skilfully blends narrative and reflection into a rich and compelling tapestry.
The book charts Larry’s journey towards wisdom and spiritual maturity. Through his persistent search for mental health, wellbeing and wholeness, he seeks not only to understand and heal himself, but also to explore the processes of emotional healing that can lead others towards personal growth, joy, contentment and love.
Early praise for Happy as Larry
The book has already received strong endorsements:
“Highly recommended… A milestone in human self-understanding.”
Anthony Seldon
“This is a wonderful book.”
Kenneth Wilson
“A beacon of hope.”
Philip Sykes
Shortlisted for a national award
Happy as Larry was also shortlisted for the Selfies Awards 2026, in the memoir category for self-published books – one of just six titles chosen. Larry attended the awards ceremony at the Groucho Club in London, alongside authors and publishers from across the self-publishing world. Full details of the shortlist are available via The Selfies.
The book has also received a glowing review from the Royal College of Psychiatrists here, and perhaps most movingly – a message of congratulations from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, whose secretary wrote that His Holiness
“commends his approach to cultivating peace of mind through a secular framework – one rooted in our shared humanity, and a deep conviction in the oneness of all people in their desire for happiness and freedom from suffering.”
Who the book is for
If you are unhappy with today’s secular society, concerned about where we seem to be heading, disenchanted with traditional religious teachings and practices, or feeling a need to go beyond the superficiality of everyday life, Happy as Larry offers an enjoyably thought-provoking read.
It will particularly resonate with readers seeking meaning, emotional insight and a renewed sense of purpose.
Congratulations, Larry!
